I was speaking to a friend recently and the positivity habits discussed in a previous post. I asked them how they were coping with the lockdown and what they missed the most. I was surprised to receive the answer, “The thing I miss the most is the isolation.”
He went onto explain…”I am used to working from home and as an introvert I enjoy it when I do. I can get plenty of work done, but I also have time for me, when I can take a break and collect my thoughts which is how I recharge my batteries. What’s different now is that my family are in the house as well, and they are all extroverts and miss the social interaction that they are used to. So when I take breaks from the laptop, the Zoom calls and so on, they see me as another opportunity to interact!
As a result I feel as though I am on the go all the time, which is quite draining, so they are not getting the best of me which is frustrating for all of us.”
I thought this was an interesting take on the situation, as the advice given out is to make sure you speak to friends and family on a regular basis, set up calls on House Party and Zoom and so on to help maintain good mental health. Exercise is also identified as helping keep us in a positive frame of mind, helping others makes us feel better, as it does those on the receiving end of the various acts of kindness we have all read about.
We all have different ways to help us manage stress and pressure, and we need to bear in mind that not everyone will use the same techniques. Extroverts will welcome the opportunity for greater interaction with others, introverts may often want time to themselves to re-energise and in the current lockdown finding that solitude may be more difficult than normal.
What do you do to recharge your batteries?
Talk to friends, read a book, online exercise classes, volunteering to help others, music?
What do you miss most as a result of the lockdown?
