A very good post, which all leaders should grasp and abide by.
I might add that, as well as 1 & 2, Accountabilities should also be made clear (along with Roles. Responsibilities, Authorities).
Then, along with 4, you can trust, but with appropriate verification, such as Go Look See to confirm that direction, progress and status are as expected, then apply that all-important recogniton for job well done (or not so well done if necessary).
"Letting go" altogether could be abdication of the leader's responsibility, rather than delegation.
I look forward to more like this :)

Good article, a lot of service in America is based on this and it would be great if we saw more of it in the UK. I was once taught a service lesson: "Do more than what you are paid for and eventually you will be paid more for what you do"

Michael, I absolutely love this article! I totally agree and I use these techniques too. I think that positive self-talk is my #1 tool in my tool box. I use "affirmations" that I write, as well as simply think positive thoughts. I practice ahead positive conversation of difficult situations as well.
Limiting Beliefs can become "Empowering Beliefs" if we want them to be. Sometimes we need help and that is what a life coach is for. :) Also, I love the quotes you picked.

Hi,
Great story! I totally agree with you on the need to have a worthy goal and enlisting other people to help you get there. The Michael Jordan ad for Nike illustrates the importance of embracing failure:

Who'd have thought he had failed so often! :-)

Great article, and... scary example!

I work a lot with values, but more on how it affects a person's own actions or inactions... And as a relationship coach I often work with couples on identifying conflicting values as a source of their misunderstanding... but I never looked at it from a more holistic view, on how others' values, almost daily, affect us. And it's scary to think that teachers can have such squeed values still and try to "dump" those values on our kids...

Great post, encompasing perhaps one of the top principles of success.

At 23, with no money in my pocket, I decided to quit my job and become a millionaire... or homeless - nothing in between. And in short eight months, I reached my goal: I became..., well, homeless. How's that for persistance :)

I never gave up on my dream... I lived at a church shelter for close to a year, and every morning I'd put on my suit and tie and hit the streets... and by 27 I was on top of the world - more successful than I ever imagined.

So, yes, persistance does pay off. Just have to be careful you are persistant with WHAT / in WHAT DIRECTION. A fly can be really persistant trying to get out of a window, only to die on the window seal. I'd say
1. Pick a worthy goal (a BIG one) and go for it
2. Ask other successful people how they got "there" and follow in their foot-print
3. Take massive action - don't be afraid to fail. There's no such thing as failure - only learning experiences and stepping stones...
